Research into natural products
has a long history in New Zealand, based on a wealth of outstanding land and
sea based natural resources, and optimum growing conditions for a wide range
of other crops from around the world. Originally research focused on the scientific
novelty of the native resource but now more often concentrates on ways of utilising
this unique resource.
Research activities extend from studies on traditional Maori medicine and
identifying valuable components in agricultural and marine industries such
as dairy, kiwifruit
and seafood, to the production, extraction and formulation of final products
from high value crops like Echinacea.
New Zealand has the capability to provide research support for the entire
production chain, from growing raw materials to the finished product. A
number of companies
can also complete efficacy testing.
Research is carried out by a variety
of companies and organisations including government owned and private research
companies and manufacturers.
New Zealand’s research facilities are world class and cost competitive.
